Since the concept of solid-state imaging devices was proposed by Bell Laboratories in the United States, solid-state image sensors have been rapidly developed and become an important branch of sensing technology.

Image sensors have recently become a focus that cannot be ignored in the market, forming one of the hottest areas in the semiconductor industry. CCD image sensor and COMS image sensor (CIS) are two widely used image sensors.

CCD image sensor converts optical signal into digital electrical signal to achieve image acquisition, storage, transmission, processing and reproduction. The conversion of optical signal to digital signal is completed by CCD film. The CCD film is composed of three parts, that is, the lens, the color filter and the induction circuit, and the general shape and operation mode have been finalized.

CMOS image sensor (CIS) is the integration of analog and digital circuits. It is mainly composed of four components: microlens, color filter (CF), photodiode (PD), and pixel design. CMOS image sensor is usually composed of image sensor array, row driver, column driver, timing control logic, AD converter, data bus output interface, control interface, etc. These parts are usually integrated on the same silicon chip. Its working process can be generally divided into reset, photoelectric conversion, integration, reading several parts.

According to MarketsandMarkets, CCDS have traditionally held the largest market share due to their higher resolution and photosensitivity. However, as far as the current market is concerned, CIS has been widely concerned by the public and is considered to have the most development potential due to its cost-effective, fast processing speed and low power consumption characteristics. Due to its advantages of small size, low power, easy integration, faster frame rate and lower manufacturing cost, it is expected to occupy a dominant position in the market.

Big data shows that the automotive CIS market will maintain a compound annual growth rate of 20% in the next five years, and the market size is expected to grow rapidly from $900 million in 2019 to $1.9 billion in 2023, higher than other CIS market segments. According to Yole data, the penetration rate of global cars carrying 2 or more CIS is only 34% in 2018, and the value is expected to grow to 60% in 2021, and the number of cameras mounted on bicycles will rapidly increase. Although SONY occupies an absolute leading position in the global CIS market, due to the different requirements of automobile manufacturers for CIS from mobile phones, reliability indicators such as high temperature resistance and collision avoidance are the main measurement standards, and the verification time of automobile manufacturers is also longer, ON and Howe have a slight advantage over SONY in the automotive field.
