Application of ceramic circuit boards in the automotive electronics industry

      

        With the development of automobile industrialization, the automotive industry has also ushered in the largest explosion in history. Since 2009, China has replaced the United States as the world's top automobile sales market. At present, the automotive industry is developing towards digitization and intelligence. As the information source of automotive electronic control systems, automotive sensors are key components of automotive electronic control systems and are increasingly valued by more and more automotive manufacturers as the main direction for future development.

        The car sensor is an input device of the car computer system, which converts various working information during the operation of the car, such as vehicle speed and temperature of various media, into electrical signals and sends them to the computer to promote the engine to maintain good operating conditions.

        The quality of car sensors is related to the safety performance of cars. With people's attention to technology, the demand for sensor quality is also increasing. Therefore, strict standards have been established when purchasing components. Traditional automotive sensors use metal based circuit boards, which cannot match high configuration requirements. After multiple studies and tests by manufacturers, the most stable and reliable ceramic circuit board has been selected.

Ceramic circuit boards are very important in improving the overall quality of automotive sensors. They have many advantages that traditional circuit boards cannot match, mainly reflected in three aspects:

        1. Higher thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of traditional aluminum based circuit boards (MCPCBs) is 1-2w/mk, while the thermal conductivity of copper itself is 383.8w/mk. However, the thermal conductivity of the insulation layer is only about 1.0w/mk, and a better one can reach 1.8w/mk. The thermal conductivity of alumina ceramics is 15-35 w/mk, aluminum nitride ceramics is 170-230 w/mk, and the thermal conductivity of copper substrates is 2w/mk. The ceramic substrate uses ceramic sheets as the substrate, without the need for an insulation layer. The heat on the copper wire is directly transmitted to the ceramic sheets and dissipated, fully preserving the thermal conductivity of the ceramic sheets.

        2. More matching coefficient of thermal expansion. The material of sensor chips is generally silicon, and the thermal expansion coefficient of ceramics and chips is similar, which will not cause significant deformation during drastic temperature differences, leading to circuit detachment, internal stress, and other problems.

        3. Corrosion resistance. As we all know, the environment in which the internal components of a car operate is extremely harsh, often exposed to high temperatures and strong corrosion. According to reports, metal corrosion causes an average annual loss of $150-250 per car worldwide, and there are many car recalls caused by corrosion of automotive components. Ceramic circuit boards use inorganic non-conductive ceramics as the substrate, and the metal directly contacts the ceramic, which has strong corrosion resistance and will not damage the sensor like metal based materials.
