Application of Ceramic Substrates in the Lighting Industry

      In 2014, Japanese scientists Yuki Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, and Japanese American scientist Shuji Nakamura achieved great success in the field of LED and were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. The award speech stated: "Incandescent lamps illuminate the 20th century, and LED lamps will illuminate the 21st century.". In order to pursue a higher lighting experience, lighting fixtures are constantly being improved, and currently, LED lights have become the mainstream in the lighting industry.

        An LED light is a semiconductor chip that converts electrical energy into light. It is fixed on a bracket with silver or white glue, and then connected to the chip and circuit board with silver or gold wire. The edges are sealed with epoxy resin to protect the internal core wires. Finally, the lamp housing is installed. The rapid development of LED in the lighting market is closely related to its own advantages. LED lights adopt the most advanced secondary lighting technology and imported packaging technology, which have various advantages: small bulb size, light weight, and high efficiency and energy saving. It only consumes a few kilowatt hours of electricity per thousand hours, while ordinary 60W incandescent lights consume one kilowatt hour of electricity per seventeen hours, and ordinary 10W energy-saving lights consume one kilowatt hour of electricity per hundred hours. LED lights have an ultra long lifespan, are not afraid of vibration, are not easy to break, and can have a normal service life of up to 50000 hours, It is 50 times longer than the lifespan of ordinary incandescent lamps and more than 6 times longer than that of ordinary energy-saving lamps. In addition, LED lamps also have green and environmentally friendly functions, which have received strong support from the country.

        Ceramic circuit boards have a wide range of applications, with the most representative being the use of LED lights. Everyone knows that lights emit light through electricity. According to statistics, only 20% of electricity is converted into light, and the rest is converted into heat. If timely heat dissipation is not possible, the temperature inside the lamp will be too high, which will greatly shorten the lifespan of the LED. This is also a problem that restricts the development of the LED lighting industry and urgently needs to be solved. The use of ceramic circuit boards effectively solves the heat dissipation problem of LED lights. Ceramic substrates have good thermal conductivity: the thermal conductivity of traditional aluminum based circuit boards (MCPCBs) is 1-2w/mk, while the thermal conductivity of copper itself is 383.8w/mk. However, the thermal conductivity of the insulation layer is only about 1.0w/mk, with better ones reaching 1.8w/mk. The thermal conductivity of alumina ceramic substrates is 15-35 w/mk, aluminum nitride ceramic substrates is 170-230 w/mk, and copper substrates is 2w/mk; The aluminum/copper based circuit board itself has a high aluminum thermal conductivity, but there is an insulation layer on the aluminum/copper based circuit board, which leads to a decrease in the overall thermal conductivity of the board. Ceramic circuit boards use inorganic non-conductive ceramics as the substrate, and then the metal directly contacts the ceramics, generating heat that quickly transfers to the substrate. In this way, the heat generated by LED lights during the lighting process can be quickly dissipated through the circuit board material behind them, reducing damage and ensuring better lifespan.
