The development trend of LED is well-known for its small spacing and high power. In this trend, COB packaging with smaller size and higher light intensity stands out and quickly becomes a hot topic in the entire LED industry. And not only lighting, but also COB display technology is becoming more mature, especially in the past two years. With the improvement of production technology and material usage, COB packaging technology has made qualitative breakthroughs. Some of the factors that previously restricted development have also been solved in the process of technological innovation.
The main problems faced by previous COB were the issue of yield and cost, because COB packaging is a new packaging technology with multiple lamp beads integrated, and the technical threshold is high and difficult. The biggest challenge faced is how to improve the first pass rate of products, which is a technological peak faced by COB packaging. However, it is not insurmountable, but relatively difficult to implement, and its main issue is still the cost. Due to the lack of large-scale production capacity for COB packaging, a cost advantage has not yet been formed at the P8-P10 level. At present, there are unique advantages in segmented special application markets such as sports venues and rental markets that require outdoor displays that are not afraid of collisions, as well as high, low temperature, humid, and salt spray application environments. At the P5-P6 level, the cost is already equivalent to SMD. In P4-P3 or even more dense pure outdoor applications, the cost will have an absolute advantage. Once production capacity is formed in the future, COB packaging will have a price advantage at all point density levels. Another reason is that COB is a multi bead integrated packaging that requires very high heat dissipation, so only LED ceramic substrates can be used. Previously, LED ceramic substrates in China were not developed and are still in the laboratory stage. The LED ceramic substrates used in domestic COB products are still heavily imported, which will cause a significant cost burden.
Nowadays, COB products in China are different from before, with packaging manufacturers led by Mulin Sen launching top-notch COB products. The first reason is that with the increase of manufacturing, there has been significant progress in domestic production technology and processes, providing a high guarantee for the yield rate; The second reason is that ceramic substrate manufacturers led by Sliton have started to rise in China. Over the past two years, they have successfully mass-produced world-class ceramic substrates, which are even lower in cost compared to foreign countries, saving at least 50% of the cost compared to imports. In terms of cost-effectiveness, COB has already been invincible.
