In the future, smartphones will have built-in gas sensors that can warn people of excessive exposure to harmful gases and particles. According to Myms Consulting, Slitone Ceramic Circuit Board has developed a MEMS ceramic substrate to help gas sensors respond faster and provide more accurate measurements.

"The ceramic substrate we developed is only 5 square millimeters in size, which is the smallest ceramic substrate in the world, and it is also highly stable." Slitong laboratory director Peng introduced.

Director Peng and his research team used laser technology in the development of this ceramic substrate, combining the ceramic surface with the surface ionization of the metal layer, and then cutting at the micron level, so that its volume can meet any current needs, there are currently two types of AL2O3 and ALN.


 

  

Traditional glass fiber substrate and metal substrate can not meet the requirements of highly integrated, in order to make the gas sensor can be successfully embedded in the mobile phone, the intelligent use of smaller MEMS processing, this way will lead to a high degree of integration brought about by a variety of problems, such as thermal conductivity, high temperature resistance, insulation and a series of problems need to be solved. But with the use of ceramic substrate, these problems will no longer be a problem, and the gas sensor is one step closer to our mobile phone.

In this miniature ceramic substrate, in addition to having high thermal conductivity, high temperature resistance, insulation and many other advantages, there are other metal substrates and glass fiber substrates can not achieve, one of the advantages is that the strength of the miniature ceramic substrate is higher, directly make up for the fragile shortcomings of the ceramic substrate, the miniature ceramic substrate will become a perfect substrate.

However, the disadvantage of using ALN materials is the relatively high cost, so it is so important to make the ceramic substrate as small as possible. "Our goal is to reduce the size of ceramic substrates to 1 square millimeter and make it profitable through mass production." So far, we are making good progress, "Peng said.

Currently, the main obstacle to integrating gas sensors in smartphones is that these sensors take too long to react. The ceramic substrate enables more efficient transmission of ambient air to the gas sensor, reducing the reaction time of the gas sensor from minutes to microseconds. With the help of this ceramic substrate, the gas sensor can not only measure the concentration of particles, but also perform other functions, such as whether the air in the room is fresh and whether the window needs to be opened for ventilation. In theory, it is also possible to analyze the body's breath gases, such as breathalyzer tests.

The micro-ceramic substrate can also be used in the medical field, for example, it can be used in medical patches, continuous trace delivery of hormones or analgesics; Or as implants to help adjust the eyeball in the treatment of eye diseases such as glaucoma. The ceramic substrate can also provide a pleasing appearance for the enclosure equipment. "We are currently working with a partner in the industry to develop the application," Peng said.

As a project supported by Made in China 2025, Peng and his research team are also exploring another application: the development of multi-layer ceramic substrates. One embedded in our computers could more than triple the size of computers. Computer manufacturers have shown great interest in this, "Peng added." This ceramic substrate is a promising technology for any user who wants to accurately transmit data or reduce the size."
